Work and workplace is meant to be a source of inspiration, purpose and energy. However, recent stats on workplace stress show that work is becoming a source of stress, anxiety and exhaustion for various reasons like:

- overwork or under-work,
- unorganized management communication,
- problems with boss,
- lack of clarity at work and
- leadership changes to name a few.

Here are a two stats published by CompareCamp in 2020 to put this into a different perspective and see how it is not a stand-alone issue to an individual worker and his/her emotions but goes beyond that for both the individual and his employer.

  1. Seven in 10 adults report work stress affects their personal relationships.
  2. Job stress is estimated to cost the US industry more than $300 billion in losses due to absenteeism, diminished productivity, and accidents.

It is no wonder that World Health Organization announced that “Stress has become a World Wide Epidemic”.

To make things worse, technology has added to that stress with frequent notifications distracting us along with our insistent behavior to check emails even after work.

This is why consciously having a Thrive mind instead of a Survival mind makes a huge difference at workplace. The former “responds” while the latter “reacts”. It is important to find ways to reduce the stress and anxiety by shifting from Survival mind to Thrive mind.

According to Nick Ortner, best selling author Tapping Solutions,

“Techniques to help overcome chronic stress include seeking help from a mental health professional, setting priorities in your daily tasks, focusing on what you have accomplished during the day instead of your shortcomings, getting regular exercise, and incorporating Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) or Tapping Therapy into your life.”

By tapping on 9 meridian points on your face and upper body, EFT or Tap Therapy can get you past your feeling of “being stuck” and bring in calm and clarity to help you with a Thrive mindset. This therapy is a combination of Eastern wisdom about acupressure and meridian points with Western knowledge about psychotherapy. Research conducted at Harvard Medical School over a period of 10 years found that tapping on meridian points decreases arousal in the amygdala (the part of your brain that triggers a “fight or flight” stress response in the body). Studies done by Dr Peta Stapleton, a clinical psychologist and TED Speaker “EFT Tapping reduces cortisol levels by as much as 24% within just one hour”.

The best part is EFT can be complemented with other techniques like meditation, breath-work and mindfulness to greatly enhance and achieve better overall health.

Considering that 53% of workers feel mental health benefits are essential post-COVID-19, being aware of your stress levels and it’s risks is a personal responsibility of the employee and a corporate responsibility of the employer!
